The University of Minnesota Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) is intended to meet the requirements of the federal Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories Standard, commonly referred to as the ‘Lab Standard’. The lab standard provides exemptions to the more comprehensive Hazard Communication Standard ‘HazCom’ requirement applicable to all employees.
The CHP describes policies, procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment, and work practices that will most effectively minimize exposures, injuries, illnesses, and accidents.
All laboratory workers must be made aware of this plan. New employees must review the plan and receive safety training before beginning work in the laboratory. The plan must be available to all laboratory workers at all times.
